BREAKING: BLM resumes selling wild horses by the truckload

We just received word — the BLM has scrapped a rule designed to prevent the sale of wild horses and burros for slaughter.

Can you pitch in right now to help us fight back?

Six years ago, the BLM was exposed for illegally selling almost 2,000 wild horses for to a Colorado kill buyer who sold them to slaughter plants in Mexico.

In response to the scandal, the agency adopted a rule preventing the sale of more than four horses to one individual without written approval from the Assistant Director of the BLM. The rule was a safeguard against the sale of horses for slaughter.

But now, the BLM has rolled that back — and is selling wild horses by the truckload again!

The new rule allows BLM to sell up to 25 horses without special approval, and places no restriction on the number of times an individual can purchase horses.

At $25 per horse, this creates an powerful incentive for shady sales to unscrupulous buyers. The number of mustangs entering the slaughter pipeline is bound to skyrocket!

We’re mobilizing now to fight back — working with our allies on Capitol Hill, getting the word out to the national media about BLM’s latest move and exploring legal options. Can you help fuel our rapid response?

Oppose Another Mass Roundup of Nevada Mustangs

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting public comments on another massive helicopter roundup of Nevada mustangs — this one in the Eagle Complex on the border with Utah. The BLM allows just 145-265 wild horses to live in this 1,160-square-mile public lands area, while authorizing the annual equivalent of 4,400 cow/calf pairs to graze there. The action perpetuates the BLM’s broken cycle of roundups and removals and failure to use humane and scientifically-recommended birth control to manage wild horses and burros in the wild. The Latest: Wild Horses and Capitol Hill

Well, they’re back at it again—Congress has begun work on the Department of the Interior/ BLM’s budget for the Fiscal Year 2019, which starts on October 1. And again, the House of Representatives is looking for ways to harm horses on the western range. This year, the House Subcommittee on Interior and Environment Appropriations has forwarded report language that, while avoiding a direct attempt to allow outright slaughter, instructs BLM to start the process to “immediately begin designing the regulatory framework and technical protocols for an active sterilization program.” The report language also directs BLM to “analyze” an option to kill healthy horses older than 10 years — less than half the lifespan for many wild horses! BLM Releases Summer/Fall Roundup Schedule: 6,000 Mustangs and Burros in the Crosshairs

This BLM is doubling down on the mass roundup and removal of wild horses from our public lands, a management practice that the National Academy of Sciences called “expensive and unproductive for the BLM and the public it serves.” In the crosshairs over the next four months: nearly 6,000 wild horses and burros, currently living peacefully on our public lands in eight Western states. THE CLOCK IS TICKING on 25 new lives. – 25 Miniatures are at risk of dying, and we need your help to save them…

We came together and saved 25 more mustangs this last week. Thank You for making that possible. Out of those 25, we brought home 4 orphans and a badly injured mare and baby. Thankfully the extended network of folks came together to help.

As always, Chilly Pepper incurred ALL THE COSTS to rescue them, but once again they are OFF OUR BOOKS, and safe and sound until they find their forever homes.**

Unfortunately with those 25 we incurred some hefty vet bills. I just saw one of them this morning. This bill is $1972.85, which is pretty much going to wipe out most of the budget.

We also have another vet bill for emergency care for Valentine. Matt came home to find him in desperate need of vet care, and although the Vet did every thing she could my beautiful boy died. It is heartbreaking to be gone for so long and have a horse get sick and not make it. We saved 25, but my beautiful boy is gone.

I RECEIVED ANOTHER EMERGENCY CALL YESTERDAY – We are on standby for 25? miniature horses, similar to the ones shown above. Their lives are at risk, but unless we raise enough funds we will not be able to answer the call. We spent thousands of dollars to save the last 25, and we are simply tapped out.

We have a few days to a week or so? We are on standby for when the miniatures are all rounded up and we can pick them up. But it will not happen if we do not raise funds to cover the rescue.

The rescue work we do is very expensive, but Y’ALL ARE DIRECTLY SAVING LIVES! Matt and I are willing to keep doing the work, but as of right now the budget is tapped. We have been getting lots of kids placed, and that also makes a huge difference in the feed bill. We definitely DO NOT hoard horses, and most all of your donations go to saving more lives, as opposed to feeding “stored horses”.

PLEASE HELP if you can. We will ONLY BE ABLE TO SAVE THE MINI’S if folks open their hearts. We are ALSO STANDING BY for more babies. The roundups are happening as I type this and that means lots more orphans. As we sit right now, there are simply not enough funds to save more lives.

We are driving thousands of miles while we save and place these horses. Our rescue spent over $8000 just in fuel last year, but YOU SAVED hundreds of lives. So I am asking folks to help us keep saving more lives if you can.

Utah wild horses need your voice today

The BLM is seeking public comments for the roundup and removal of up to 149 “excess” horses – or 66% of the population – from inside and outside the Muddy Creek Herd Management Area (HMA) in Utah.

The mustang’s habitat is made up of 283,000 acres of land, but the BLM only allows between 75-125 horses to reside within it. According to the BLM, removing the horses is necessary to prevent degradation to the range. But here’s the kicker: they permit nearly five times that number for livestock on allotments that overlap with the HMA.

Not only is this roundup ridiculous, but if Congress approves any of the BLM’s options in its recent report, the horses removed from this area are in danger of being killed, sold for slaughter, or sterilized.

Instead of this plan that endangers these herds, the BLM should immediately implement a comprehensive PZP program in the HMA to vaccinate enough mares to significantly reduce population growth rates over time.

Please take one moment to let the BLM know that the Muddy Creek wild horses need to remain wild and free on our public lands in Utah!

Last month, the BLM rolled out a disastrous report to Congress on wild horse and burro management that pays lip service to humane solutions while continuing to push for mass roundups, slaughter and sterilization.

Even before Congress acts, the BLM is implementing actions that will destroy numerous wild horse herds and place thousands of mustangs in jeopardy of being killed.

We’re taking to the courts to stop them… and we need your help to keep our critical litigation going.

Right now, we’re in federal court in…

➔ Wyoming, where we’re challenging the BLM’s attempt to round up even more wild horses than authorized from the Wyoming Checkerboard by pretending that foals don’t count in the overall removal totals. Help us win.

➔ Nevada, where we’re fighting a disastrous BLM plan to reduce the breeding population in two eastern Nevada regions by 90% and destroy these wild free-roaming herds by castrating stallions and using an unproven vaccine called GonaCon on mares. And we’re gearing up to sue to stop the BLM from zeroing out (eliminating all wild horses from) nearly one million acres of public land while allowing subsidized cattle grazing to continue in force. ➔ Utah, where we’ve been fighting for four years to dismiss a rancher lawsuit seeking the removal of hundreds of wild horses from our public lands. We won at the lower court; now the ranchers have appealed, and we are defending Utah mustangs at the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Help us win.

Worse, the BLM wants to sterilize 80 percent of the wild herds… a move that is both dangerous and would take the wild out of wild horses by destroying their natural behaviors.

Are Mustang Slaughter Proponents Shifting Tactics in Congress?

At a hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), who last year lobbied hard for language authorizing the mass killing of wild horses and burros, signaled a possible shift in tactics. Instead of advocating for Congress to lift the ban on mustang slaughter, they focused on non-lethal management strategies. While the Interior Department’s Fiscal Year 2019 budget still proposes language that would authorize horse slaughter, it may be that Secretary Zinke and Rep. Stewart have resigned themselves to the fact that mass slaughter of America’s wild horses and burros is wildly unpopular, especially in an election year. AWHC Candidate Questionnaire: Ready to Launch

As a supporter of AWHC, you deserve to know where your candidates stand on the issues involving wild horses. Mustang Rescue Underway

As a result of AWHC’s Cooperative Agreement with the State of Nevada for rescue of the Virginia Range horses, over 200 of these cherished mustangs have been saved from slaughter. Through a strong coalition effort, the vast majority of these horses have been placed in quality homes. However, the downside of adoption is that many adoptions fail, and mustangs routinely enter the slaughter pipeline. Such is the case with five Virginia Range horses — a senior gelding and his family — who are currently being transported back to Nevada after being rescued from the kill buyer who operates the notorious Bastrop kill pen in Louisiana. Your Senators and Representatives are back in their home districts for the next two weeks for Easter Recess.

This is a great time to call their district offices and thank them for maintaining protections for wild horses and burros in the 2018 Omnibus spending bill, which passed last week.

Remember, the Fiscal Year 2019 Appropriations process is already under way, and the Interior Department is once again doubling down on its plan to slaughter our nation’s iconic mustangs and burros.

We have a major battle on our hands again, and we can lay a strong foundation for the fight ahead expressing our gratitude now to Congress for listening to the will of the people and protecting our wild horses and burros.

What You Can Do

1. Find the district office for your Representative and Senators and give them a call!

Here’s what you need to say: “I’m calling to let Senator/Rep [name] know how much I appreciate Congress’ decision to maintain long-standing protections for wild horses and burros from killing and slaughter. Please ask Senator/Rep to ensure that these same protections are carried forward in 2019 spending legislation. Thank you.”

Fate of 90,000 Horses to be Decided in Congress Next Week

We have just eight days until Congress must make a decision on spending legislation for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2018. Behind the scenes negotiations are going on RIGHT NOW as Congress decides between the Senate Interior spending bill, which prohibits killing and slaughter of wild horses and burros, and the House version, which would allow the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to destroy up to 90,000 mustangs and burros. It’s time to reach out to House and Senate leadership to save the lives of our American mustangs and burros – will you make the calls today?

NV Business Leaders Stand With AWHC to Save Virginia Range Mustangs

We were honored this week to be joined at a press conference in Reno, Nevada by officials from the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRI), the largest industrial park in the world, in support of our fight to save the Virginia Range horses in northern Nevada. TRI Director and Storey County Commissioner Lance Gilman gave an inspiring talk about the incredible economic development happening at the TRI and how the powerhouse companies there — including Tesla, Switch, and Blockchains — are strongly behind protecting the horses. Tomorrow, we’ll file our lawsuit to stop the state from giving away the horses to a private owner who would then have the “property rights” to do what it wants with the horses, including selling them for slaughter.

AWHC and TCF Threaten Legal Action Over Upcoming BLM Advisory Board Meeting

AWHC and The Cloud Foundation are taking a stand against the BLM’s violation of public notice requirements in the scheduling of the next meeting of the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board, currently set for Salt Lake City on March 27, 2018. Yesterday, William Miller of Scottsdale, AZ, attorney for AWHC and TCF, sent a formal letter demanding that the meeting be rescheduled to allow for the required 30-day public notification. Mr. Miller says: “The BLM must give proper notice so that the public can have a voice on this issue that so many citizens care about. This Board has been consistently out of step with the wishes of Americans, 80 percent of whom oppose the killing and slaughter of our wild horses. We will not stand by while this agency trounces federal law in order to restrict the voice of the people and ram through yet another morally bankrupt and unscientific recommendation to kill our American mustangs.”

BLM Doubles Down on Mass Mustang Slaughter

The Trump Administration’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget is out, and it again asks Congress for permission to slaughter federally protected mustangs and burros in holding facilities and on the range. The budget calls for slashing $14 million from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Program budget by selling as many as 90,000 wild horses and burros for slaughter to supply foreign horsemeat markets. The lethal plan tramples the wishes of the vast majority Americans – including 86% of Trump voters — and is contrary to the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences. We now have two fights on our hands as Congress finalizes 2018 spending legislation and begins the 2019 appropriations process. Stop Nevada’s Virginia Range Mustang Giveaway

Late last week, AWHC sent Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and his Department of Agriculture a legal letter demanding that they rescind the Request for Proposals to transfer ownership of the historic Virginia Range mustangs to a private party. The new owner would then have “property” rights to do what it wants with the horses, including sell them for slaughter. The proposed giveaway is not only illegal, but also would prevent the public from having any say in the protection and management of this locally cherished mustang population. IT’S GO TIME AGAIN!

We received an urgent call for a baby mustang who is fighting for his life, but at this point barely hanging on. I apologize for the photo, but it is what we have and it clearly shows he is starving to death and in extremely critical shape. If you look closely, you can see his top line is completely exposed and simply skin over bones.

His coat is ragged and he is obviously wormy and most likely has ticks. When babies get this thin (adults too), the body starts eating itself to survive. (Honeybandit’s blood work showed his body was in that mode). That is when you start getting organ damage internally. He has been getting good food, but he obviously needs immediate attention to his health issues. As he is in urgent need of critical care, Matt will be leaving tomorrow to go get him.

We are delivering 3 horse kids on the way to WA, so although we will have a couple spaces here, Racoon needs to go immediately to the quarantine nursery. Thankfully, Matt just finished the inside stall this morning. (They say timing is everything lol).

We need to purchase stall mats and some panels for an exercise pen so he can begin his rehab once we get him home.

We need help with expenses for fuel, Coggins, vet care and special groceries for this baby. We are not sure if he will be ok but we are going to give it our all. We do have to finish his nursery prior to his arrival and we would really appreciate any help you can give this baby.

Please help us give “Racoon” a chance to live a long and healthy life. He needs immediate care so he won’t have to suffer anymore and we also need prayers that too much damage to his internal organs has not occurred. He was not expected to live this long, so it is obvious he is a fighter.

We are already in contact with the vet in his area so we will be working closely together to give him the best chance possible. Please help if you can!

Baby season is coming early this year.

I am still on crutches but will have to stay home to feed and take care of the critters. The timing isn’t convenient, but when God puts a “baby in need”, in front of you, you just “git ‘er done”. Babies can’t wait. Please say a prayer for Raccoon and help us save him if you can.

17 Days Left, The Hallelujah Horses!

In October 2016, 907 mustangs were seized by authorities from International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros in South Dakota. Fleet of Angels stepped in to take responsibility for what is now known as the largest horse rescue mission in the US.

It was during the winter months, and many of the mustangs were starved and neglected. Pleas for assistance rebounded across Facebook, and many mobilized to help save the mustangs by providing feed, shelter, veterinary care, and transport away from the property to new homes.

As a result of the non-stop efforts of Elaine Nash/Fleet of Angels and many organizations and people, nearly all of the horses have been successfully placed. The mission is nearing the finish line with a relatively small number of aged and/or special needs horses remaining.

Around November 2016, AAE inquired about assistance needed; however, severe winter conditions proved too much and transport to California too difficult. Shortly thereafter, AAE assisted with another more local rescue effort and available space diminished.

However, in June of this year, AAE got a call for assistance. Six of the Hallelujah Horses (geldings) made their way to AAE. Their stop at AAE was originally planned as a layover, but became less temporary when their destination points fell through. The Hallelujah boys joined the herd at AAE. They are Bentley, Denver, Hank, Kix, Outlaw, and Toby. What spectacular boys they are. AAE is working on a sanctuary plan for these guys in hopes we can keep them together forever!

The Countdown Continues with A Wild One

18 Days Left, Diego!
Handsome Diego was originally part of a group of mustangs gathered by the USFS in New Mexico off the Jarita Mesa Wild Horse Territory in the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson National Forest.
After being offered for adoption by the USFS at two adoption events, he was not lucky enough to be chosen.
Diego, along with herdmates Scout, Diesel and several others, were taken to the Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) in Solvang, CA.

While at the MRILC, they participated in the Center’s wild horse gentling program where students come to learn Monty’s methods.  Several more were adopted, but not Diego, Diesel, or Scout. The USFS considered their stay at the MRILC as a third adoption event, and they earned their third strike.
The USFS proposed placing them on Craigslist for $25 each; however, the instructor at MRILC knew the potential risk of kill buyers, especially being relatively close to Mexico, so reached out to AAE for help.
So, the three boys came to AAE in late 2016 to continue their gentling and to learn about life as a newly-domesticated horse.
Diego’s buddies were much more willing to cross-over into the human world.  Diego made some progress while here at AAE. Enough that he could be haltered, was finally gelded, and had a much needed hoof trim.
Diego was making slow progress; however, Diego wasn’t transitioning well into the human world. So, he went back to MRILC for another visit.
While there, Diego had a little set back, but Monty saw something in this guy that most others didn’t.  Monty asked that he keep Diego to continue his learning, so Diego went back to Solvang to live with and learn from Monty.

Conger Roundup Concludes; Research Moves Forward

The Conger roundup concluded on December 3, 2017 with a total of 111 wild horses captured. The roundup is part of an ongoing “population control research” study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and Colorado State University to assess the impacts of gelding (castrating) stallions on individual behavior and herd dynamics. While we fight to save our humane mustang management program in Nevada, we cannot lose sight of the national issue.

With Senate appropriations delayed and the timeline still uncertain, now isn’t the time to take a rest. Our opposition isn’t.

Already, dozens of our supporters have recorded video messages to Congress. We created a heartfelt ad with your submissions — you can watch it now and then record your own!

Our video tool lets you easily record a short video on your phone or laptop. It won’t take more than a few minutes, and the video will be sent directly to your members of Congress.

We know you’ll have plenty to say but a few points we hope you’ll include:

Congress must maintain the longstanding prohibition on destroying healthy wild horses and burros and oppose any effort that would open the door to slaughter.
80% of Americans oppose the slaughter of America’s wild horses.
The PZP birth control vaccine is a scientifically-proven, low-cost alternative that can used to humanely manage wild populations and maintain their wild free-roaming behaviors.

So record your own video now. It’s really easy. It’ll take just a few minutes of your time. And it will help us cut through the clutter in Washington and be heard on this critical issue.
