On November 30th , the AHC sent out a Washington Update to our members on our efforts to address the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandate. The AHC, in collaboration with the rest of the animal agriculture community, has requested that the Department of Transportation (DOT) grant a one-year enforcement delay followed by a waiver and limited exemptions from compliance with the December 18, 2017 implementation date for the Final Rule on Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and Hours of Service (HOS). Additionally, we requested that the DOT address the significant problems with the mandate that will occur if the compliance deadline is not extended. The welfare, safety, and health of the animals in transit, together with the safety of other drivers on the road, are top priorities for the equine industry and its enthusiasts.
The introduction of the ELD mandate has also brought to light concerns about Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) requirements from the entire equine community. Drivers have been required to have a CDL in order to drive certain commercial motor vehicles (CMV’s) since April 1, 1992. That being said, a truck and trailer can be considered a commercial vehicle without the requirement that you obtain a CDL. The AHC would like to note that the requirements for a CDL or CMV classification have been in effect for quite some time, and are not new developments along with the ELD mandate.
In an effort to help provide some clarity for both our members and the general equine industry, the AHC has put together two brochures: “Electronic Logging Device Mandate: How Will It Affect You?” and “Commercial Driver’s License: How do I Know if I Need One?” Both are available as a .pdf on the AHC’s website here:http://www.horsecouncil.org/eld-mandate-cdl-requirements/
We encourage our members to share this information, and please contact the AHC if you have any additional questions.

15 Days Left, Angus the Gentle Giant!
Remembering Angus! He was a big, enormously handsome, genuinely kind, 21-ish Shire gelding. He introduced our volunteers and guests to the true gentleness of these giant horses.
He crossed the Rainbow Bridge this year, and he has been missed a ton.
Angus had quite a few needs when he came in last year, but he had a lot of life to live and lots of love to give. He was battling chronic uveitis in both eyes, chronic progressive lymphedema (CPL), and a big swollen knee. One eye did not respond treatment, so it was removed to prevent ongoing pain and further injury; thankfully, his remaining eye responded well to treatment. His CPL was treated and managed with regular care. His knee responded well to antibiotics and a little rest. Who knew he had a bad knee?
He wasn’t quite as good as new, but he was much improved. With lots of love and TLC, Angus was feeling good and loving life, and he was adored by all of our volunteers, but mostly by his bestest friends, Kasey and Linda. Kasey was his eyes in darkness, and he showed him the way. The two were buds in the truest sense of the word. Linda took special care to make sure Angus was a big, happy guy with all of his needs met, and he showered her with love…. and slobber. They shared a special bond that only the luckiest of people and horses get to experience.
Unfortunately, Angus contracted EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis), a parasite that attacks the central nervous system. Poor ol’ guy, if anyone didn’t deserve yet another blow, it was Angus. Although we treated the EPM, and he responded well, his uveitis decided to advance to glaucoma. Medications kept his eye calm for a short while, but the last few weeks we were on a bit of a rollercoaster. We saw a big decline. We knew the day was coming. He started showing neurologic symptoms again, and we could no longer control his eye pain. With his quality of life our biggest priority, we felt it was time to help Angus across the rainbow bridge.
We miss ya’ big fella, but we are so incredibly happy we got to know ya’ and we got to love ya’!!

16 Days Left, Bentley!
Bentley is one of the Hallelujah Horses. He’s so special, he needed a day of his own. Bentley was the most pathetic looking when the boys arrived, but at the same time, the most majestic.
He was thin and his hooves long. An umbilical hernia protruded from his abdomen. His teeth needed work. His long mane hung over his struggling body. He moved gingerly to avoid his long toes. Yet, there was something absolutely breathtaking.
He was fearful, yet stoic. He was calm, yet explosive. He was willing, but rebellious. There was that inner struggle; one voice said ok, the other hell no.
Before long, he knew we were here to help. We were able to trim his hooves and float his teeth. He moved more freely, and the weight started to take hold.
Today, he’s gained confidence and courage, and
he enjoys the company of his five friends under the trees.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
17 Days Left, The Hallelujah Horses!
In October 2016, 907 mustangs were seized by authorities from International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros in South Dakota. Fleet of Angels stepped in to take responsibility for what is now known as the largest horse rescue mission in the US.
It was during the winter months, and many of the mustangs were starved and neglected. Pleas for assistance rebounded across Facebook, and many mobilized to help save the mustangs by providing feed, shelter, veterinary care, and transport away from the property to new homes.
As a result of the non-stop efforts of Elaine Nash/Fleet of Angels and many organizations and people, nearly all of the horses have been successfully placed. The mission is nearing the finish line with a relatively small number of aged and/or special needs horses remaining.
Around November 2016, AAE inquired about assistance needed; however, severe winter conditions proved too much and transport to California too difficult. Shortly thereafter, AAE assisted with another more local rescue effort and available space diminished.
However, in June of this year, AAE got a call for assistance. Six of the Hallelujah Horses (geldings) made their way to AAE. Their stop at AAE was originally planned as a layover, but became less temporary when their destination points fell through. The Hallelujah boys joined the herd at AAE. They are Bentley, Denver, Hank, Kix, Outlaw, and Toby. What spectacular boys they are. AAE is working on a sanctuary plan for these guys in hopes we can keep them together forever!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
18 Days Left, Diego! Handsome Diego was originally part of a group of mustangs gathered by the USFS in New Mexico off the Jarita Mesa Wild Horse Territory in the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson National Forest.
After being offered for adoption by the USFS at two adoption events, he was not lucky enough to be chosen.
Diego, along with herdmates Scout, Diesel and several others, were taken to the Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) in Solvang, CA.
While at the MRILC, they participated in the Center’s wild horse gentling program where students come to learn Monty’s methods. Several more were adopted, but not Diego, Diesel, or Scout. The USFS considered their stay at the MRILC as a third adoption event, and they earned their third strike.
The USFS proposed placing them on Craigslist for $25 each; however, the instructor at MRILC knew the potential risk of kill buyers, especially being relatively close to Mexico, so reached out to AAE for help.
So, the three boys came to AAE in late 2016 to continue their gentling and to learn about life as a newly-domesticated horse.
Diego’s buddies were much more willing to cross-over into the human world. Diego made some progress while here at AAE. Enough that he could be haltered, was finally gelded, and had a much needed hoof trim. Diego was making slow progress; however, Diego wasn’t transitioning well into the human world. So, he went back to MRILC for another visit.
While there, Diego had a little set back, but Monty saw something in this guy that most others didn’t. Monty asked that he keep Diego to continue his learning, so Diego went back to Solvang to live with and learn from Monty.

Nevada’s beloved Virginia Range mustangs are in grave danger.
On Tuesday, the Nevada Board of Agriculture voted to direct the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) to transfer ownership of the estimated 3,000 Virginia Range horses to a private entity. The new “owner” would then have private “property rights” entitling them to do whatever they want with the horses, including send them to slaughter.
The Board’s vote defied the will of the public and business community, which turned out in force to oppose this dangerous giveaway. The only comment in favor of the plan was made “Protect the Harvest,” an organization whose top priority is legalizing the slaughter of America’s horses and burros.
For years, AWHC has worked to protect the Virginia Range horses. Through Cooperative Agreements with the State, we implemented the world’s largest humane birth control program and rescued over 240 horses from slaughter. Then on October 25, the NDA abruptly cancelled these agreements.
It’s clear that the good-old-boy cattlemen’s network is taking advantage of the horses’ legal vulnerability (the horses are not protected under federal law) to push their agenda of mustang roundup and slaughter.
We can’t – and won’t – let this stand. While we explore legal and political avenues to challenge this action, we need you to contact Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval – he has power to reverse his administration’s decision that jeopardizes the future of this historic herd.
As a Nevadan, I ask Governor Sandoval to reverse the Board of Agriculture’s decision to give away the Virginia Range horses to a private entity. This would prevent the public from having a voice in the protection of these horses and allows the new owner to do what they want with them, including send them to slaughter. Please keep the horses under state jurisdiction and restore the cooperative agreements with the American Wild Horse Campaign that were providing for humane management and rescue of these horses that are part of our state’s history and culture.
If you are from outside of Nevada
As an American who travels for business and personal vacations in Nevada (or if applicable “As someone who visits Nevada as a tourist”), I urge Governor Sandoval to stop the transfer of ownership of the cherished Virginia Range horses to a private entity that will have the right to do what they want with them, including slaughter. I urge the Governor to reinstate the Cooperative Agreements with the American Wild Horse Campaign to provide for the humane management and rescue of Virginia Range horses and preserve this important tourism resource. I will not spend my tourism dollars in Nevada if the Governor proceeds with this giveaway.
We’re not giving up on the Virginia Range horses and you can’t either. Please act today and stay tuned – we’ll get you the latest developments as they happen.

19 Days Left, Banjo!
Banjo, we said goodbye to another long timer at AAE
Banjo was relinquished by his owner in January 2014 after his owner developed health issues. He shared a pasture with another horse for 12 years, and he was very protective of his pasture-mate, much to his detriment.
Banjo had a very sweet side, but he also tested his handler, and displayed some naughty stud-like behavior. He was fearful of ropes, and he would challenged his handler when approached with one. We were told he was used as a child’s riding horse (hard to imagine) 12 years prior.
Banjo came around nicely. Separating him from his former pasture-mate helped him tremendously. He softened, and he was becoming a very social guy that enjoyed attention. But he never entirely let go of his “macho”, which made him less than trustworthy. Eventually, we introduced a saddle, then a rider. He accepted both willingly, but not so confidently. He needed a confident handler and consistent handling to continue developing his own confidence.
Sadly, in January of this year, Banjo coliced quite severely, and we had to say goodbye to our handsome guy.
He was lucky to have a couple special friends at AAE that showered him with love and attention during his time with us.
Banjo’s story isn’t one with a happy ending, but we’re glad he was loved and cared for in his final years here.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
20 Days Left, Maci
Maci arrived at All About Equine Animal Rescue, Inc. on September 4th, 2015. She was one of four horses that came to AAE as part of a collaborative rescue effort in Fallon, NV that saved 56 horses at auction from purchase by a slaughter buyer. Maci was a two year old, and the rest of the foursome included two yearlings, Bailey and Mazie, and Jolene, an older, experienced mare. Maci, Bailey, and Mazie were not halterable when they arrived.
Maci was a BIG girl!! Sadly, she unloaded lame on her front right leg. That’s always creates a big dilemma when you’re dealing with an injury or illness. It took a little time to gentle her and get her comfortable enough to be evaluated (e.g. sedation, legs and hooves handled, and exposure to “things” like radiology equipment and all the cords that go with it), but what a sweet and willing filly she was. Maci was a ray of sunshine to everyone that met her. Though scared, she had this calm, kind, quiet and super willing demeanor. Many that met her thought she would make a fabulous therapy horse.
After a bunch of diagnostics including radiographs and ultrasound, it was discovered that Maci had several issues, including a fractured sesmoid bone and torn suspensory ligament in her front right, and Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions in at least three fetlock joints, and the fourth was assumed. The fracture and tear, though substantial, were expected to heal with stall rest, but the OCD lesions would require surgical intervention to prevent further/ongoing damage, chronic pain, and a short life. With OCD, Maci was expected to be an unridable companion animal in the future. Two surgery dates were needed, one for fronts and one for the hinds.
Sadly, Maci was a throw away by her former owner, a young horse with injuries. She was likely sent to auction to get rid of the problem. Unfortunately, there are many in our society that don’t believe an injured horse has any purpose or value. The overpopulation problem doesn’t help. Fortunately for Maci, she landed at AAE, and now she has gone from no future at auction to a future of forever.
With huge thanks to supporters like you, we were able to move forward with Maci’s treatment and surgery. Her first surgery was January 25, 2016. Her second surgery was February 29, 2016. Her surgeries went smoothly. However, it turned out she had TWO fractured sesmoid bones in front, and three torn suspensories. Poor, poor filly! Fortunately, the OCD was not as bad as it appeared in the radiographs, and that afforded her a better prognosis.
After many, many months of stall rest and lots of daily hand walking by volunteers, Maci was recovering well. She had a long stay in the barn, but she made the best of it, entertaining us all with her cuteness. She was a bright light for all that visited; she greeted everyone that entered the barn. Her eyes spoke volumes; you could see how much she enjoyed the attention and interaction with volunteers and visitors. She simply took it all in stride. Maci is an all-time AAE favorite!
Maci’s prognosis was good after her surgeries. She slowly transitioned back to normal horse life, graduating from stall to turnout into her stall paddock, then into a little larger paddock, onto the small roundpen, and by the time she moved up to the arena, everyone could see how well she was doing. She felt good and she let everyone know!! The most exciting part was that she had recovered so well, about a year after her surgeries, her prognosis improved from a companion horse to a light riding horse. Good news for all to hear. Yayyyyy for Maci!!
Check out Maci in one of her early arena turnouts.
Video: Watch Maci Here
Then, the bittersweet day came… over a year after her surgeries, and now deeply embedded in all the volunteers hearts, it was Maci’s turn to go to her forever home! These days are always SO exciting when a horse gets to go home with his or her forever person, but those that connect with the horse face the loss of a special companion. The bonds that are made at a rescue or so special. Some of us shed many tears, happy tears and sad tears, but we all hold on to knowing the time at AAE is only one part of the journey. When one horse leaves us, it opens the door for another, another horse that needs some love, care and attention from AAE and all of you, until it can move on to it’s new home.
Maci’s adopter had recently separated from the military and relocated from the east coast. She was looking for a companion for her lonely horse. She was looking for an easy keeper. A horse that could keep up with her rambunctious young mare, and one that could be loved on. Maci was the first that came to mind, and when they met, Maci did her thing!
Look at her now!
Maci is now Sienna, the unlucky little filly that was thrown away at auction with a plethora of injuries, but the lucky filly that our rescue partners and the rescue community cared enough to save from auction and ultimately, slaughter. She is living a pampered life and learning there’s a lot more she needs to do in this world. We couldn’t be happier with the progress Maci made from start to finish, and we are beyond thrilled she found such a special partner to offer such a promising future.
We all miss you, Moose!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
21 Days Left, Gentry and Foley
Last, but not least, AAE welcomed Gentry, a pretty young mare, and Foley, her little “red” colt from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary in September 2017. These are the last two, which made 13 horses helped from the DreamCatcher gang. Nine have been adopted so far. Can we make it 11?
Gentry had only recently been introduced to humans when she arrived, so she was a bit shy and unsure about the new humans that were caring for her. She is learning humans are not so scary, and she knows they’re the ones with the good stuff (food). She always waits patiently at feeding time.
Upon dental exam, we learned she is only about 2-1/2 years old.
A baby with a baby, but she is such a good mama.
When they arrived, young Foley seemed a bit lethargic and small for his age, but mom is small, too. Thankfully, nothing significant was found during vet exam. Maybe it was the stress of transport? After a couple weeks at AAE, Foley’s energy level increased, and he was finally running and bucking through his paddock, like baby boys do. He and mom play well together. He has also become friends with Blue. They play like two kids on a football field (no flags). Blue is such a great babysitter. He worries and watches intensely when Foley and mama walk to other end of the paddock and get too far away.
Gentry and Foley are becoming lovely young horses, and they will be available for adoption soon. Gentry needs a little more confidence with us two-leggers, and Foley has a little growing to do before castration. It won’t be long! Keep an eye on these two.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
22 Days Left, Our handsome Ford!
The DreamCatcher connection continues…
A handsome lil, young, gray gelding came to AAE after a failed attempt in a gentling program. He landed at AAE for a layover in transportation with two other somewhat overwhelmingly dominant geldings as they were making their way back to DreamCatcher. He seemed to find himself unwittingly between the antics of the other two, and the poor guy couldn’t seem to catch a break. He had a kind eye and an inquisitive nature, but for intimidation by the other two. We called him Ford. He seemed to be a good fit here at AAE, so we held him back when the trailer came for the boys.
Ford is enjoying pasture life with the herd, and he is slowly softening with humans. He’ll be looking for a home soon after he’s brave enough for a dental exam and hoof trim.
Welcome to the AAE family, Ford. We know your special person will find you soon!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018 23 Days Left, Meet Cowboy!
About a month after lil’ Rascal came to AAE, DreamCatcher contacted AAE about another orphaned foal. He was born around May 5, 2017, but wasn’t found until May 8 when his mom was suffering from colic. She had been hiding him. Mom was a senior mare, and her colic was severe. Sadly, she had to go to horsey heaven, so her lil guy traveled all the way to AAE so he’d have a big sister to grow up with and lots of people to watch over and love him.
He arrived late on May 8th. This lil guy had slightly bowed legs and an ol’ soul. It was like looking at an old cowboy. Alas, AAE dubbed him Cowboy. After evaluation by the vet, and a selenium injection, he was on his way to happily ever after. He quickly picked up drinking milk replacer from a bucket, and in a blink, he stole everyone’s heart.
Cowboy’s stay at AAE was just long enough to get strong and healthy, then lose the jewels. He quickly found his forever home with an AAE adoption veteran. On September 9th, he was off to his new life, and hopefully some schooling by his new horsey mom, Harley (aka Kai).

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 24th Day, there was the Burros!
Continuing to support DreamCatcher in its recovery period after the long illness and passing of their Executive Director, AAE took in several of the DreamCatcher burros. Three came into AAE in August and two in September. They are so cute, and there was a ton of adoption interest! These lil’ guys did not stay long, and they barely had names before they left.
The first 3 Burros AAE received were all wild, and their first introduction to humans was at DreamCatcher before they made the journey to AAE.
Lefty (Burro #035) came into his name because of a left hoof malformation. Remaining hooves were in good condition. His teeth, hooves, vaccines and deworming were done at AAE. Fortunately, after a little sedation and dental work, hoof radiographs did not indicate any serious issue. With a trim, his hooves were much improved, but hoof handling would be a work in progress. Lefty was the first of the three to find his forever home.
Burro #031 otherwise know as Joe, was a bit shy, but slowly accepted humans with leading and grooming. His teeth, vaccines and deworming were done at AAE. He was such a lucky one to get to go home with Waylon.
Burro #032, Zac, was also a bit shy, and slowly accepted humans with leading and grooming. Not long after his teeth, vaccines and deworming were done at AAE, and shortly after Lefty went home, so did Zac.
Burros #40, Brown, and #42, Gray, came in a month after the first three and soon after their teeth, vaccines and deworming were done, they were headed to their new homes, as well.
There are many more young mustangs and a few burros still in need of homes. We are so happy we’ve been able to collaborate with DreamCatcher to aid in their efforts!
We wouldn’t be able to help without your continuing support! Thank you!

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 25th Day, there was Waylon, Walker and Whitney!
Continuing to support DreamCatcher in its recovery period after the long illness and passing of their Executive Director, AAE took in a few more of the DreamCatcher horses. Waylon, Walker, and Whitley all came into AAE from DreamCatchers in June of this year. Three young mustangs looking for a home.
Walker was the most social of the trio, and Waylon was well on his way to enjoying humans. Whitley wasn’t convinced. It took a little effort to convince him to warm up, but it was worth the wait. He evolved into such a sweet lil’ guy.
The story of the three W’s isn’t very complicated. They came in because there was a need. We caught them up with hoof and dental care, vaccines, and deworming. They continued their growth while here, and they grew more fond of humans. If only they were all so straight forward. Except when Whitley managed to have a fight with a branch in the pasture, and we’re not sure who won. He didn’t need just one vet visit, but two, to resolve the laceration/puncture and fluid build up.
Walker was the first to find his forever home. He was adopted in September.
Waylon followed a month later, and he left for his forever home with a burro friend.
Finally, dear Whitley stole the heart of one of our volunteers, and he just went home a few days ago.
These boys were so lucky to meet their match!

As Congress debates the future of wild horses and burros in behind-the-scenes negotiations, the key to saving these cherished animals remains expanding public awareness. One great way to spread the word about the threats facing mustangs and burros is by informing your friends and neighbors through letters to the editor. Members of Congress also monitor local newspapers to keep abreast of their constituents’ views and opinions. We have an awesome feature that makes sending your letters to the editor EASY and FAST! Try it out by clicking below!
Wild Horses: What’s Happening This Month in Congress
You may have heard that things in Washington are not working very well these days, and we’re here to report that—sadly, that’s exactly correct. Read more about this month on Capitol Hill and what’s in store for wild horses and burro by clicking below.
Conger Roundup Concludes; Research Moves Forward
The Conger roundup concluded on December 3, 2017 with a total of 111 wild horses captured. The roundup is part of an ongoing “population control research” study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and Colorado State University to assess the impacts of gelding (castrating) stallions on individual behavior and herd dynamics. Read below for more about the research project and a report from the roundup.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 26th Day: Rascal from Dream Catchers!
AAE welcomed several young horses and burros from the DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary this year to support DreamCatcher’s recovery and herd reduction efforts (focused on rehoming young/captive born mustangs). DreamCatcher is in a recovery period after the long illness and passing of their Executive Director, Barbara Clarke in November of 2016. There are many more young ones in need of homes.
Our first call from DreamCatchers came one morning in April of this year. There was an orphan foal. Mom, a mustang, wanted nothing to do with this little filly, and she scaled a fence, leaving her behind, an orphan. She was just a few hours old. We scrambled to clear the way; transport was coordinated, and off we went. We met in Reno to pick her up. She was about 4.5 hours away, and so met near the middle.
Unfortunately, when we got to Reno to make the “exchange”. She was very weak, and definitely in a fragile state. She couldn’t stand up on her own.
We high-tailed it to Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center (LBEMC) on the way home.
Turns out, her blood results were not good. Initial indications were a selenium deficiency, and she was hospitalized. A call at midnight informed us her blood values were moving in wrong direction, and we were bracing for not so good news in the morning. HOWEVER, morning came, and she was fighting!
She was still quite sick, but she was drinking her milk replacer with a good appetite. That offered some optimism. She was dealing with a multitude of things: being rejected by mom, stresses of transport, secondary effects resulting from mom’s malnourishment, and selenium deficiency which caused white muscle disease and kidney issues. She was fighting hard, but each day brought something new. First, it was IV’s for fluids and medications, then an oxygen tube and a stomach tube to help with eating and prevent her from aspirating milk.
Next was an umbilical infection and belly edema. She couldn’t get up without assistance. Every day she fought like a little warrior, and every day we could, we were there. Her spirit never waned, and she showed slow, steady improvement, but she needed round the clock care. Her stay in the hospital stretched to 13 days, and at that point, though still very sick, we brought her home to continue care. Obviously, the expense was huge.
Round the clock care at the barn took it’s toll, but fortunately she got lots of love and attention.
Even Holli helped watch over Rascal.
Then came that monumental Day 26, Rascal got up all by herself. Her wobbly little legs fought hard, but she DID it.
She rallied through meds and treatments, but her woes didn’t stop there. She started having GI issues that turned out to be a very nasty bacteria and very nasty diarrhea!
More meds, more treatment, and she finally “firmed up”, thankfully!.
….and there’s more. Her umbilical hernia grew, and at first glance, now she looked like a gelding. That needed repair. Once she was beyond the GI issues, we took her in for surgery to repair the hernia.
Thirty days into recovery and she was doing fabulously!
Then, a new intestinal issue popped up. It’s been months, and we are still battling a GI mystery issue.
However, through nearly all, she has been one happy and otherwise healthy lil’ gal with the most amazing spirit! She’s a character. She’s sassy. She’s naughty. She’s sweet.
She’s an absolute love, and she’s quite the entertainer.
Rascal’s story at AAE isn’t over.
Somehow, I think she has something to do with that.
Thankfully, because of many of you, Rascal has been able to get the care she needed, not only the initial emergency treatment, but the extended hospital stay and the various challenges she’s had in her young life. It’s hard to believe she just turned eight months old!
Our little fighter is still dealing with a few challenges, but she meets everyday with spunk and that fighter’s attitude.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 27th Day, there was Lilly, Ivy, Maverick and Dawn!
All About Equine focuses its efforts on horses, but every once in a while,
we have the opportunity to help other animals.
This year, we had two senior alpacas, a goat, and a sheep move on to their forever homes.
Maverick and Dawn came to AAE after their family had to downsize from their property. They were one of many breeding pairs, but time ran out for their owners. Turns out, Dawn was pregnant. We had no idea when she was due to deliver, only that her belly became suspiciously round. We made the mistake of not separating her and Maverick. Before we knew it, she delivered a really cute little guy, and papa was so proud, he wasted no time in making sure baby alpaca number two was on its way.
(PS, not something WE are proud of). Needless to say, it wasn’t long before the vet made a visit to Maverick, and much to his dismay, he lost the family jewels.
Much to our chagrin, last year we discovered a “skinny-ness” under Maverick’s woolly rug when he was sheared. When we had his teeth floated, we learned how “senior” he was. His teeth were wearing down to the gums. He was put on a pellet diet (sound familiar???) and thus started a new feeding routine amidst our “farm” area. Turns out, Dawn is older than Mav, but her teeth were in better shape. We tried the pellets and new feeding routine for many, many months, and Mav’s condition improved some, but he wasn’t thriving. Our “farm” was too diverse and there was too much food competition for the ol’ guys. Almost coincidentally, one sunny day, a family stopped by looking for a couple of farm animals to call home at their new property. It was a perfect situation for these two to have their own space and their own food. Mom fell in love, and since it was Mother’s Day weekend, she gifted herself two senior alpacas. It was a bit poetic.
Lilly and Ivy, they have their stories, too! Ivy came to us after her mom rejected her. She was one of three lambs, and mom could only manage two. Poor lil’ Ivy was left behind. She was raised at AAE as a bottle baby, and she earned a lil’ job in our kids programs. However, she loved kids so much, she wanted to “play” with them. Unfortunately, she grew….and grew….and grew. For the littlest of littles, it was quite intimidating, and before you knew it, the littles would cry of fright! Poor Ivy, she just wanted to be part of the fun. Thankfully, one of our adopters saw her cute little mug on our website and welcomed her at her farm where she could frolic w/goats and mini horses.
Lilly was welcomed at AAE as a “maybe”. The same day Ivy lost her mom, and poor Lilly lost her newborn kids in a tragic accident. We thought “maybe” it was an (unusual) match in the making. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Not even close! Lilly’s a super sweet mini-nubian….well, not so sure about the mini, but definitely sweet. She, too, loved the kids so much, she really put her mind to it when she tried to get attention. She butted everyone that got in her way…..farm animals and humans. Sadly, she was “scary”, too! Fortunately for her, one of our prior horse adopters lost one of their older goats and it’s buddy was left to mourn alone. Lilly wasted no time becoming a new best friend.
We’re glad we have happy farm animal stories, too.

Let’s Deck the Stalls with Boughs of Plenty for 2018
On the 28th Day, there was Easton!
Little Easton was abandoned on a remote road when she was about six months old, and neighbors in the area saw her hobbling on the streets for several days before calling animal control. After she was picked up, the local animal control contacted AAE for assistance in March 2016. Easton was partially to non-weight bearing on her right hind. She was initially diagnosed with a potential abscess or coffin bone fracture.
Imagine the little gal, she was a stray, without food or water, out alone on the country roads and probably had not felt safe enough to rest. Once in a paddock at animal control, she laid down, but couldn’t get up. We took her in at AAE and upon extensive evaluation by our vet (movement evaluation, sedation, palpation, radiographs, etc.), we learned that Easton had a fractured pelvis. Her prognosis was questionable. Despite the fracture, she seemed very happy, and she was an otherwise healthy, friendly, and outgoing filly with youth on her side. After discussing all options, we decided to give her 60-days to see how she progressed.
Easton is a fighter; she did amazingly well. She was closely monitored on stall rest for months. She reached a milestone after six months, and her hip radiographs looked GOOD! However, she had a setback during the last couple months of her stall rest. She was a very large yearling, and her rapid growth coupled with confinement due to the fracture resulted in contracted tendons that caused her to “knuckle” over her front fetlocks when she walked. Another hurdle for this always smiling lil filly; we tried some more conservative options with wrapping, stretching, special shoes, and exercise, but no luck. She needed check ligament surgery to help relax the tendons in her front legs.
Three months after surgery, Easton was doing great. However, due to the pelvic fracture, she had limitations making her a difficult horse to adopt. She would not be able to be ridden, so she needed a special home where she could be an incredible companion for someone seeking a horsey friend, and earlier this year she FOUND the most amazing home! A wonderful family adopted Easton (and another AAE horse, Jolene) to be a companion to their older gelding.
Easton is an absolute character with an amazing personality. This filly is a special girl that has touched many of AAE’s volunteers and visitors who met her!
CONGRATULATIONS LIL GIRL!! We miss you, but we are soooo happy for you!

On the 29th Day, there was Sapphire!
Sapphire came to us in August 2010 after family health issues, and we were told she was 24. Sapph was one of our residents who’s job was to help new volunteers learn about horses. She loved being groomed and welcomed the oodles of attention that came her way. We shared her story earlier this year. It’s a special one we want to share again.
All of our volunteers and visitors that met Sapphy have many happy memories, too. She helped so many people overcome their fear of horses, and she helped so many people turn their blue days to new days once again.
She had in presence in our herd, too, and we called her Ms. Sassy Pants. There was no question what her “flat as a pancake” ears meant, and when Sapphire walked, horses listened, even Cowboy learned. Sapphy was a hoot!
Sapph was known around AAE for her famous “Belly Dance”. Her favorite past time was standing over a trough, one just tall enough to tickle her belly. She’d stand this way forever! The red one was her favorite. She made us laugh when we would watch her tip her trough over, then side pass over the top.
She was a silly girl, too. She would humor us with our silly human antics, such as party hats and birthday cakes. She used to love carrots ’til we tried to disguise her lil’ pills in them. She didn’t touched one after that. So sassy!
This ol’ gal gave her all, and she was the most special, most dependable, and most trustworthy girl ’til the end. In August, we had to help our ol’ girl, Sapphire, across the rainbow bridge. As best we know she was 31 years old. She stumbled over her toe walking over a rock and fell. It was a bit tough getting up, and though she tried to be most stoic, she injured her hip in the fall.
AAE will never be the same without her. It helps to know she’s running pain free through green pastures once again! She is missed by so many! We love you Ms Sassy Pants!

On the 30th Day, there was Dayton!
Dayton was just a lil’ one when he arrived from the Fallon feedlot in July 2009. He was a nursing colt, only about a month old. He came with his mom, Sierra, and adopted brother Clayton. Clayton was orphaned when his mom shipped to slaughter. Dayton and mom took Clayton in under their wings. All were sickly and malnourished, but with special care by AAE volunteers, they all survived and eventually flourished.
It didn’t take long, Dayton became best friends with one of our youth volunteers when she helped him learn about halters and lead ropes, humans holding hooves, respect (ha!), and all the other horse-human activities that go along with horses living in a human world (aka, umbrellas in the rain). The bittersweet day came, and Dayton was adopted. Our story of young love came to a halt.
Due to an unfortunate family health crisis, Dayton returned to AAE in 2013. He’s baaack, but my goodness, now he’s the BIG man on the block! Because of his gentle giant nature, our volunteers adored him, and he earned a job at AAE as a program horse. Dayton called AAE home for several years, but a secret wish held hope that one day the dynamic duo would be reunited. While back at AAE, the younger horses naturally gravitated towards Uncle Dayton and Grandma Sierra for comfort and leadership. Grandma Sierra wisely taught them their manners and proper horsey behavior, while Uncle Dayton was the big character that played along with the kiddy antics.
This year, a big dream came true. With hard work and determination, Dayton’s “girl” made it possible to bring Dayton home. It was an adoption eight years in the making.
From feedlot to forever, congrats Dayton and Liv!
