Largest Humane Management of Wild Horses

Last month marked the second anniversary of the signing of our cooperative agreement with the State of Nevada for the humane management (via PZP birth control) of the historic and beloved Virginia Range wild horses near Reno. This community-based program has been a success and exceeded our established target goals. The Virginia Range horses are challenged by habitat loss due to encroaching development in this fast-growing area of northern Nevada. The program’s goal is to reduce the removal of horses from the range by humanely slowing population growth rates and reducing population numbers over time. Ninth Circuit Appeals Court Tosses Anti-Mustang Lawsuit

Last week, we scored another major legal victory when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by the Nevada Association of Counties, the Nevada Farm Bureau and others seeking the removal of thousands of wild horses and burros from Nevada public lands. It was our third appellate court win in less than a year! The battle in federal court goes on, however, as wild horse opponents shift legal strategies in an attempt to force massive wild horse roundups. The BLM Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) is meeting in Ely, Nevada on October 6 & 7, 2016. This citizen advisory board has within its jurisdiction several of Nevada’s wild horse Herd Management Areas. Recently, this RAC sent a letter to the BLM supporting the removal of 4,000 wild horses from public lands in eastern Nevada and promoting surgical sterilization of wild herds. We must urge the RAC to recommend humane, socially acceptable solutions for wild horse management in Nevada, instead of promoting controversial, divisive and cruel management techniques that are not supported by the American people.

Action Alert: BLM Landscape Project Endangers Nevada’s Mustangs

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carson City District Office in Nevada is accepting public comments on a “Landscape Project” that will directly impact the management of wild horses living in the Clan Alpine Herd Management Area (HMA), which overlaps with three livestock grazing allotments. The BLM is proposing to increase livestock grazing on these allotments while keeping the decade-old “Appropriate” Management Level (AML) the same. Worse yet, the BLM is proposing to geld stallions and skew sex ratios which destroy natural wild horse behaviors and social social organization of the Clan Alpine herd. There is a better way…and we must demand that the BLM change course.
Mine Expansion to Impact Triple B Wild Horses in Nevada
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comments on an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding the proposed expansion of the Bald Mountain Mine, an open pit gold mine in White Pine County, Nevada. The mine lies entirely within the Triple B Herd Management Area (HMA), and the expansion will have a negative impact on over 7,000 acres of habitat and available surface water availability by draining water from aquifers already depleted from drought. Even if BLM ultimately approves the mine (a scenario that seems likely), the agency can take steps to protect horses and mitigate impacts of the mine expansion. Take action below to urge BLM to protect wild horses in the Triple B HMA.

Weigh in for Humane Wild Horse & Burro Management in Nevada’s Blue Wing Complex
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public scoping comments in the development of a ten-year management plan for the wild horses and burros in the Blue Wing Complex in northern Nevada. Under pressure from area ranchers, the BLM is likely to develop plans for perpetual roundups and removals of hundreds of wild horses and burros from the public lands in this area — unless they hear from you! Now is the time to weigh in for humane management of our wild horses and burros on our public lands. Please act today!
Arizona Congresswoman Takes a Stand for America’s Wild Horses
As the first American woman to fly in combat, U.S. Congresswoman Martha McSally (R-AZ), a retired Air Force Colonel, is a military hero. And now she is a hero for America’s wild horses as well!. This week, Rep. McSally asked the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee to incorporate language in the 2017 budget bill that would prevent the BLM from turning over captured wild horses to other federal, state and local agencies for use as “work animals.” Rep. McSally is concerned, as are we, that this will provide a potential backdoor route to slaughter.
