wild horses
Midnight deadline: Your Legal Fund gift is still pending
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
We have a lot to be proud of this year.
So far this year, our legal team has helped overturn the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Adoption Incentive Program (AIP), which was funneling hundreds of wild horses and burros to slaughter, stopped the BLM’s largest planned wild horse roundup in history, and secured necessary federal protections against slaughter for our wild herds.
These landmark victories show the kind of work your donations make possible — holding the BLM accountable and securing lasting protections for these majestic animals.
But swift, effective legal action requires resources. With multiple lawsuits underway — and more battles certain to come — we must be ready to act at a moment’s notice.
Wild horses and burros cannot defend themselves, which is why we have to be their voice. And Meredith, we know that when we stand together and sue to protect them, we win.
It’s why our Legal Team has a nearly 90% success rate, and why our work in 2025 has brought with it some of the biggest legal victories our organization has ever seen.

We sue. We win. We protect wild horses
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
Dust. Helicopters. Families of wild horses split apart as they run across our public lands.
Meredith, this is what our field teams witness every time the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) carries out a helicopter roundup.
Our team is fighting back around the clock to protect our wild herds. This year, we’ve made history with a number of landmark legal victories for wild horses and burros. Because of the generosity of supporters like you, Meredith, and the power of the AWHC Legal Team, together we:
- Wyoming Lawsuit: Stopped the BLM’s largest attempted eradication of wild horses in history.
- AIP Victory: Forced federal agencies to follow the law, protecting horses from slaughter.
- Preserving the Slaughter Ban: Secured critical federal protections against horse slaughter in Congress.
POWER OUR LEGAL FUND
But our 2025 legal docket isn’t cleared yet – the BLM is considering several other actions that put our cherished wild horses and burros in danger. So, we’re turning to our community to prepare for the fights ahead.
POWER OUR LEGAL FUND
It’s a long road we have ahead of us, but our legal team has a nearly 90% success rate and stands at the ready.
These victories weren’t just the byproduct of our tenacious legal team. Our AWHC coalition of field observers, advocates in Congress, and supporters like you made these wins possible too, Meredith.
POWER OUR LEGAL FUND
Thank you for continued support. We couldn’t do this without you.
AWHC Team
Here’s why supporters like you have made a gift
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
Last week, we reached out to American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC) supporters about why they give — why protecting wild horses and burros matters so deeply to them. And the response was amazing.
I’ve been reading the countless stories that inspired people to make their first gift to AWHC. Today, I’m proud to share a few of those stories with you.

These stories are so powerful — they explain the many reasons why advocates show up for wild horses and contribute to AWHC. And their support has been vital in our fight to safeguard America’s iconic animals.
From helping fund science-based research and fertility control to fueling legal battles in federal court or amplifying our voice on Capitol Hill, AWHC is fighting every single day for our wild herds. Today, you can help us do even more.

Across America’s public lands, thousands of wild horses and burros roam free — but their wild future is at risk because of the federal government’s cruel and costly Wild Horse and Burro Program.
Right now, more roundups are being scheduled, and more of America’s iconic animals are at risk of lifetime confinement or even slaughter. If you believe public lands should stay safe and wild, now’s the time to act.

Re: America’s iconic animals near Mono Lake
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
We reached out a few days ago because the wild horses on Mono Lake are at risk of cruel helicopter roundups approved by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the United States Forest Service (USFS) — and the fight to protect them continues.
It’s not too late to call on the USFS to instead manage these wild horses humanely, in collaboration with the local Indigenous community. With enough of us, we can urge lawmakers to abandon a plan that will traumatize America’s wild horses and instead support one that honors Indigenous leadership, protects wild horses, and conserves the environment.

The Montgomery Pass wild horses, who roam free near Mono Lake, California — are at an imminent risk of losing their freedom and possibly their lives due to upcoming helicopter roundups.
Tell decision-makers to reject helicopter roundups and protect America’s iconic animals.

Near one of the oldest lakes in America roam about 700 majestic and free-spirited wild horses. For generations, they’ve lived, survived, and thrived in this beautiful area, living in harmony with the land. Beyond their natural beauty, these wild horses have a deep cultural importance and connection to the local tribal communities.
Despite this, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the United States Forest Service (USFS) approved a plan to implement helicopter removals that will traumatize and uproot these culturally and ecologically important wild horses and strip more than half of the population of their freedom.
This brutal operation is not only cruel — it is completely unnecessary. In fact, American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC), the Utu Utu Gwaitu Benton Paiute Tribe, and local communities are calling on the USFS to adopt a tribal led management plan that keeps these wild horses wild.

Here’s what our herds face
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
We’re in the thick of roundup season with American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC) observers on the ground at the Devil’s Garden wild horse roundup in California. Here, our field journalists are facing severe observation restrictions, including being placed far away and behind trees so they’re not able to see what’s actually happening to our wild herds at the trap site.
The truth is, these roundups happen far from the public eye. And they are extremely traumatic for the wild horses who have to endure them. During capture, they face lifelong trauma, injuries, and in the worst case, death.
DONATE
From last year’s roundup season, through now, our observers have brought to light some of the cruelest treatment of our wild herds by federal officials on public lands.
- In November, in Nevada, a 12-year-old black stallion was forced to run at full speed to exhaustion until he collapsed. Forty minutes later, he was euthanized on public lands. Help AWHC fight back, donate today >>
- In July 2024, after a roundup in Nevada’s Blue Wing Complex, a mare being chased by wranglers collapsed on the ground and was unable to stand up. Then she was repeatedly kicked in the head by a wrangler. Help AWHC fight back, donate today >>
- In October 2024, multiple foals were seen hobbling in holding facilities after a helicopter roundup in South Steens, Oregon. Help AWHC fight back, donate today >>
- That same month, during the Twin Peaks helicopter roundup in California, the back door of a livestock trailer flew open, sending nine horses tumbling out of the moving vehicle. Help AWHC fight back, donate today >>
More than 8,000 of America’s most majestic animals were traumatized, terrorized, ripped from their families, and in some cases even killed just this year.
Every day, their freedom and right to roam are under attack, and every day AWHC is fighting back against this cruel and costly system. They can’t fight for themselves. But you can. Will you rush a gift today to fight back against this cruelty and safeguard their freedom?

⚠️ We just filed a lawsuit to protect Wyoming’s wild herds
The following is from the American Wild Horse Conservation:
Yesterday, we had to return to federal court to sue the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) — again.
The agency had scheduled October 13 roundups in Wyoming’s Checkerboard to eradicate 3,000 wild horses and 2 million acres of habitat, despite a Tenth Circuit ruling declaring this plan violated federal law.
But hours after our lawsuit was filed, the Department of Justice confirmed that the BLM was canceling the October roundups — delaying them until at least summer 2026. This is a reprieve, not a victory. For thirteen years, we’ve battled the BLM and the Rock Springs Grazing Association, which seeks to wipe out the Great Divide Basin, Salt Wells Creek, and Adobe Town herds forever.
Litigation is the last line of defense, but it’s expensive, often costing more than $100,000 per case, and we’ve filed six in Wyoming alone.
Right now, your support is urgently needed to fund two critical lawsuits:
- A new case to block the BLM from acting before the courts issue a final ruling. Donate now >>
- The remanded case to permanently strike down the agency’s eradication plan. Donate now >>
FUND OUR LEGAL BATTLES
Your support has fueled major wins this year — like ending the Adoption Incentive Program and this summer’s Tenth Circuit victory. But today, we’re stretched thin. Every dollar you give powers our legal team, strengthens our advocacy, and protects wild horses on the range.
Time is critical. Help fuel our fight — in court, in Congress, and on the range.
For their freedom,
Suzanne Roy
Executive Director
