(Page46) What of the suitability of a mule for child? Longears have been babysitting kids for centuries! Mules and donkeys generally LOVE children. As the mule is half donkey, he possesses many of the fine characteristics that make him suitable for children: an affectionate nature, patience, humor and respect. But I must caution you… he is also part horse and will generally get his disposition from the mare. So, if you wish to get a mule for your child, be sure he is an individual from a mare with a quiet disposition, and possesses that same quiet disposition. Then you can consider such things as size, color and other traits when purchasing a mule for your child. The right mule can be just as good a babysitter as the right donkey…and more reliable than most horses! In the past, ladies and children usually experienced their first ride on donkeys, and then graduated to horses over time due to their quiet nature. The modern mules of today can be incredible performers in the equine activities that children love the most: trail riding, pole bending, barrel racing, working cattle, Western and English Pleasure, and the list goes on!
