Pulling a Light Weight Drag
Pulling a lightweight drag such as a tire, a log, or rails through the shafts is an important stage in your equine’s driving training before actually hitching to a vehicle. Regardless of size, before working as a team, work each animal separately for individual body development. Begin by training in the round pen with each individual and if there is no conflict, his teammate can be present. They each must learn to pull evenly and develop muscles symmetrically with impulsion always coming from the hindquarters. Using the “Elbow Pull” will help him with this and he can soon work with his partner in the round pen learning turns and halts. This is very much the same as people learning to lift correctly from their legs and not with their back! Rig the drag with a quick release nylon strap through loops in the traces made with baling twine and use an assistant for safety. When the hindquarters are properly engaged, the equine travels evenly, bend correctly through turns and has nice square halts, you can then move into the open arena.
