Every horse deserves a safe place to grow old, surrounded by comfort, kindness, and the care they need to thrive. Our August Adoption Spotlight is finally on that path. While his recovery isn’t quite finished, this sweet senior has already captured the hearts of everyone he meets.
TOOTHLESS
Toothless arrived at AAE with six other horses in August 2025 after law enforcement stepped in to help. Their owner, the horsewoman of the family, had become bedridden, and her spouse simply didn’t have the knowledge or experience to care for them. Over time, the horses’ condition declined dramatically.
They had been living in stalls, standing on mounds of manure with no turnout for years. While they had access to food and water, they hadn’t received the basic care every horse needs. Their hooves hadn’t seen a farrier in years, and their dental health had been neglected for far too long.
For Toothless, that neglect was especially painful.
He suffers from Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH), a painful dental disease that commonly affects older horses. When he arrived, he had only one remaining lower front tooth, fractured at the gumline, while the rest had broken away or died. It’s no surprise he had become so thin.
Since arriving at AAE, Toothless has received the care he desperately needed. His damaged teeth and roots were extracted, his hooves were trimmed, he received vaccinations, a sheath cleaning, a microchip, and plenty of nutritious feed. Thankfully, all of his molars are healthy, so he can continue enjoying hay (his favorite meal) even after his dental procedure. With time, good nutrition, and lots of TLC, we’re confident he’ll continue gaining weight and feeling like himself again.
UPCOMING EVENTS
August 8
Facility and Special Projects Volunteer Day at AAE
Toothless is the definition of a pocket pony, a sweet old soul who adores people. He’ll be waiting to greet you at the gate, soaking up every scratch and happily following you wherever you go. It’s impossible not to smile when you’re around him.
We can’t wait to see this deserving senior find the loving family he’s been waiting for.
Even if you can’t adopt, you can still help! Please share Toothless’s story, someone out there is ready to open their heart and home.
NATIONAL MAKE-A-WILL MONTH
August is National Make-A-Will Month, and Toothless’s story is a meaningful reminder of why planning ahead matters, not just for the people we love, but for the animals who depend on us. Unexpected life changes can happen to anyone, and having a plan in place can help ensure your horses and other pets continue to receive the care they deserve if you’re no longer able to provide it. No animal should be left without a clear path forward.
We’re currently working with a community partner to plan an estate planning workshop that will cover the planning process, how to include provisions for your animals in your will or trust, and provide an opportunity to ask questions. Stay tuned for more details! We’re excited to share them as plans come together.
