The bit is a Kimberwicke and it is indeed upside down on the donkey’s headstall. It appears a lack of bit knowledge most likely occuring when bridle taken apart to clean. I hope someone tells hin next time he competes.

To keep the focus of future comments on the content of the story—yes, the bit is upside down! Hal notes that since this was a special photo for the family Christmas card, he opted to use a festive red halter for the photo instead of Redbo’s normal one, but the nylon was too wide on the cheek straps to go through the keeper the correct way. So yes, our eagle-eyed readers can rest assured that his bits are always right side up during competition!

Yes, this bit and nylon rig was hauled out just for the Christmas picture. It was cold and I was in a hurry and not paying attention. It was something I’d inherited from a neighbor’s tack sale and that I never use. Bits are NOT allowed in pack-burro racing competitions — only halters are allowed. I also routinely ride trails using only a rope halter.

Please note that Bits are not used in Pack Burro Racing. I asure you Hal has more knolege than most on gear and how it works. Find this article a excellent tribute to the high pace, mountain climbing, child raising, jackwacking, animal wrangling, life of a Pack Burro Racer and Family. Just like faising a child with autism, Pack Burro Racing is a very unselfish act. The two acts require the ability to know there is light at the end of the tunnel when you can not actually see it. Keep moving Hal, see you on Mesquito Pass!

I’m trying to reach Hal Walter to ask some burro racing questions, namely whether jacks win more races….seems he races them a lot. Is Full Tilt Boogy a jack?
I’m trying to learn to train donkeys to race, in California.

I’m happy to pay for some advice, can’t find a good email address-

Sorry, I thought this was Hal Walter’s website. I’ve bought the Meredith Hodges books and am working through it.
