Getting Down With Minis
(Page 39) Miniatures are often anxious and flighty in their behaviors, but I have discovered why, and although I have posted about this before, it bears repeating. Nearly everything in a miniature’s life is bigger than they are which automatically evokes their flight reflex! When they are not able to make eye contact with their handler, it will only frighten them more.
If you do your mini the courtesy of coming down to THEIR eye level during training as much as possible, you allow them to get the direct eye-to-eye support from you that they need to feel confident and succeed! Just make sure you do it in a safe and controlled manner, so you do not put you or the mini at risk. Make sure your environment is set up for success with no chance of abrupt interruptions and things should go well. Minis, like all equines, love a routine that they can count on, one that is predictable and facilitates confidence. You will be amazed at the bravery, bonding and ability to perform that evolves from this simple acknowledgement in an appropriate environment that can greatly enhance the bond between you!
