Each of our adoptable horses has a story, and every so often, the right person comes along who connects with that story in a meaningful way. Through these spotlights, we hope to introduce our horses to the people who may be the perfect match for them, or to someone who knows exactly where they belong.
This month, we’re featuring Rimes, a quiet and resilient mare searching for her forever home.
RIMES
Rimes arrived at AAE with Trinity in March 2024 following seizure by law enforcement in a cruelty case. She was frightened, thin, and in pain. She had significant swelling over her right rear pastern and severely overgrown hooves that likely added to her discomfort. After receiving pain medication and an initial trim for relief, she slowly began to settle in.
Radiographs revealed heartbreaking injuries: two older, unhealed fractures in her pastern bone. One fracture appeared close to fusing, but the other showed complete separation of a piece of bone. Despite the severity of her injuries, Rimes remained remarkably gentle and sweet.
With stall rest, careful management, daily medication/supplements, and lots of patient handling, Rimes improved. Then came the news we had hoped for: updated radiographs four months later showed her fractures had healed!
Today, Rimes has blossomed into a sweet little mare who genuinely enjoys kind attention and care. While her past injury means she is best suited as a non-riding companion horse, she has so much to offer someone willing to build a relationship based on patience and trust.
Sometimes healing is measured not just in physical recovery, but in trust restored. Rimes’s journey is a reminder of how patience, kindness, and compassionate care can help a frightened horse feel safe again. She is well on her way.
Rimes is current with hoof and dental care, vaccines, and deworming, and she has a microchip. She’s looking for an experienced horse person who understands that the best partnerships are often built slowly, and that horses like Rimes have a special way of rewarding kindness.
