Hi Friends,

What a busy summer it has been! Last time I did the LTR Newsletter, we were just beginning to build the elevator shaft for the Main Museum Building. We had the ground graded, but it wasn’t long before the whole construction crew began moving at WARP SPEED and got the entire building framed in with the inside rooms framed as well! Meanwhile, while the guys were working outside, Kristen and I continued to work inside getting all the displays archived and ready to be moved into the museum when it is finally done a year from now.

We had to start running TWO construction crews because we had a lot of projects ready to do when we finally got the museum building done. It took the County so long to get our building permit (8 months) that we chose to start going ahead with the Ranch Projects that we had lined up for AFTER the building was done. By hiring the Second Crew when we FINALLY got the Main Crew to work on the Museum Building, we managed to get ALL the projects going at the same time and they will ALL be finished by the time we have the Grand Opening for the Loveland Longears Museum and Sculpture Park!

Nothing short of AMAZING with a lot of help from GOD!

LTR Training Tip #120

LTR Training Tip #120: Combined Driving

Combined Driving is similar to Combined Training in that there are three elements that will be scored: Driven Dressage, a cones course in a confined space and the cross country ‘hazards’ course.

TRAINING QUESTION

Question: : I have been competing in Dressage & Combined Training under saddle in Dressage, Stadium Jumping and Cross Country Jumping. I have developed an interest in Driving. Is there anything like Dressage & Combined Training for Driving?

Answer: Combined Driving is a combination of scores from a Driven Dressage test, a Cones Course and a Cross-Country Hazard course. The Driven Dressage phase can involve Singles, Pairs and Multiple Hitches. You are permitted to show both singles and teams. Combined Driving is all about perfection and precision in driving. So, before you enter a show, be sure to have done plenty of driving homework. The Cones Course demands precision and harmony between the driver and equine. The margin of error on the course is slim, so adequate preparation and practice is essential. Learn the rules and make sure to abide by them, paying particular attention to tack, equipment and drivers’ appropriate attire. The most exciting phase of Combined Driving is the Cross-Country phase. Whether you are driving Single or driving Multiple Hitches, you’ll never know what kind of hazards will be on the course. It will demand intimate communication between the driver and his equine(s).

Once your equine is calm and experienced in pulling a cart or carriage, there are many enjoyable activities you can look forward to. Such as, picnic drives, showing in harness classes, organized trail drives and fun events, like Scurries or Cone competitions. There are excellent organizations you can join—such as national groups like the American Driving Society, as well as a great many local groups—which provide contacts, clinics and encouragement. You’ll see why driving is one of the fastest growing sports in the equine world

Longears Limelight

After collecting EVERYTHING LONGEARS after 50 years, we are concurrently making substantial progress displaying art,
statues, archiving news articles, magazines and are accumulating multiple binders full of archival materials
for display!

In addition to all we collected, we have a display that we created from photos, books and calendars donated from our Sister Museum in Torbel, Switzerland. Josefine Jacksch  and Elke Stadler provided numerous donations for our museum throughout the years and we reciprocated for their Mule Museum.  It continues to be a wonderful partnership on behalf of our beloved Longears!

TRAINING MULES & DONKEYS SERIES: BOOKS,
MANUALS & VIDEOS!!!

Our Training Mules and Donkeys Books, Documentaries and DVD Training Series was developed to help you to train your own animal with Resistance-Free techniques. This is especially important, especially in the case of mules and donkeys that actually bond to the person who trains them. In order for our program to work, it is important to use it correctly. Regardless of the age or experience of the animal, you need to begin with DVD #1 and take the training in sequence. Each DVD poses different tasks to help facilitate a good working relationship with the trainer and helps to strengthen the muscles at each stage to prepare the animal for Optimum Performance. We are preparing the animal physically,
mentally and emotionally. This is why it is important not to proceed too quickly and to do things in their natural order.
Each DVD should take six months to a year to complete, depending upon the individuals involved. Though you can buy the DVDs one at a time, there are benefits to purchasing the entire series. In addition to substantial discounts, you are able to look ahead and understand the purpose in what you are doing at the time. Our program is like grade school for equines, and lays a good solid foundation for Versatility and Optimum Performance. We begin with simple tasks that build on each other. This not only teaches the animal to do what we ask, but it also teaches us to become more prompt and appropriate in Rewarding Positive Behaviors to get the best results. We do not use the reward system (crimped oats) to bribe or coerce! The oats are given only after a Positive Task has been completed. When you do this correctly, there are little to No Resistant Behaviors.

“What a fantastic tribute to a wonderful and talented lady. This book deserves a place with all donkey and mule lovers. What an extraordinary and gorgeous book that you produced. I send my compliments to all that played a part in the publication of this extraordinary book. As Bonnie says, "Keep your traces tight!"

A longstanding member of the Cowboy Cartoonists Association, her wide variety of “mule art” can be viewed at numerous venues, mule and draft horse shows, Western arts and crafts shows, Western trade shows and on the internet at her website at www.Bonnieshields.com.  Her talents include drawing, painting and sculpture. She has done a wide variety from ink drawings to acrylic painting to bronze sculpture, from commissioned work to originals, all revering the mule. She has also written a multitude of articles for such publications as The Brayer, a bimonthly publication put out by the American Donkey & Mule Society, Mules and More magazine, and the “Bishop Mule Days” program, and her yearly publication of the BS ‘ogram is always a welcome read! Bonnie’s Letter

I live in northern Idaho in the mountains and the trees and the wild things.  Especially the wild FIRES.

You may have seen where the city of Spokane, Wa. has just been through a MAJOR FIRE. Spokane is about 30 miles west of us--as the birds fly--and it shure got OUR attention heer.

North Idaho has been suffering from NO RAIN  NO GRASS FOR SWEET MULES and often 100 degrees of hard sunshine.  We are sitting ducks for wild fires.

You kinda have to think about just what can and WILL do if one hits us.  Keeps us on our toes--that is for shure.  Also keeps us HOME.

Saying that,  BS is gonna chance it and drive to the Lucky Three in September to SEE this wonderful MUSEUM of the MULE & DONKEY that Merideth is building.  I am also dragging some of MY "historic' MULE STUFF to add to her collections.  BE AWARE!

It's been two years since we have been able to see one another so I am READY to hug all my friends on the ranch and poke into whatever I can to learn what is happening there.

Pray that fall arrives soon and Quickly for all of us.  The entire west has suffered this new quark of nature with the heat and drought.  And, as I write this, my "home" state of Indiana is flooding.

My two sweet old mules are hanging in there and eating-up the LAST of last year's hay. More hay has been promised, but I haven't SEEN it yet. I sicked my daughter, Laura, on the guy and I THINK she has him signed-up to bring my hay this Saturday.  LOVE THAT GIRL!!!  She is pretty and the guys can't tell her NO.  HAH!!  My secret weapon.

Hope the rest of you are doing fine and your barns are full of good hay for the coming change of the weather.  Our mules and donkeys are ready for some better weather--and dreaming of GRASS.  Me, too.

Keep them Traces Outta them places and mule-on!!!  ~BS

Cindy’s Letter
I returned to the Rocky Mountains with my mules this past July. There is no doubt, God created this beautiful countryside for us to explore while in the saddle with our mules. The clear streams flowing below the narrow rocky trail, took my breath away as my mule walked steadily along the canyon wall. Moose were feeding in the marsh land, while an aged mule deer gave us the social stare. Moving on down the Stock Trail, we watched the eagles fly. Underneath the clouds, forcefully, their wings stretched wider, all to keep moving with a purpose. Then it got quiet and I realized...God is here and this is where he'll stay.

                     Dusty boots and warm regards,
                                                  Cindy K. Roberts
