Jasper The Mule Products Tours LTR Blog Training
Message From

HOWDY, Y’ALL! I hope you’ve had a really nice summer! It sure was a HOT one here! We were a bit on the dry side as well, so our first cutting hay crop was less than normal (only 3600 bales instead of 5000+), but we still got enough during the first cutting to cover our equines and those at the Hearts and Horses Therapeutic Riding program for the next two years. We always keep a year’s supply in reserve for both ranches. If we get more rain this summer, we could still have a good crop for Second Cutting.

We have continued to be busy as ever! We had several tours come through this summer. One of the tours was return visitors from 2011 and they were astonished at how many new things there were to see! Rock was still alive when they were here and now we have the ROCK SKELETON EDUCATIONAL DISPLAY.  In 2015, we dry-walled the whole inside of our mobile home and created the JASPER BUNKHOUSE.

The kids tours always enjoy taking the latter part of the tour with Jasper to go see all the mules, donkeys and our miniature horse. The animals are always a bit surprised to see our Jasper mascot that leads the larger children’s tours!

Then Jasper takes delight in inviting all the kids to come into the Jasper Bunkhouse so they can see where Jasper lives, get his autograph and receive coloring pages to take home with them! It’s like walking into the Jasper storybooks with a diorama of the HAPPY VALLEY RANCH and its Bald Mountain backdrop mural painted by Bonnie Shields. In 2019, we built the JASPER CAROUSEL in the backyard of the bunkhouse.

The kids always have a wonderful time when they get their turn riding on the JASPER CAROUSEL! It is a rather unique addition to the Lucky Three Ranch exhibits...and even the adults get to ride it, too!

When Covid 19 hit in 2021, we closed the ranch tours and worked on the OLDE WESTERN TOWN of ASSPEN! The grounds have had a chance to fill in with tons of greenery, lots of colorful flowers and VERY TALL, LEAFY trees! The ranch is now at its best!

We love to have so many visitors and see them all with so many HAPPY FACES!

Best wishes and Happy Trails,

LTR Training Tip #4

Communication & Equines

Meredith gets a lot of letters and emails from people with training questions about their equines. Here, she talks about how to best communicate with your equine.

TRAINING QUESTION

Question: I have reached out to you in the past and have been pleased with your responses.  I have an 11-year-old TWH mule I've had from foal, I have had issues I've worked through with her (mostly spooking), done them, and am completely bonded and happy...  in this 11th year, she has started to bolt on me  -- 3 times this year, no apparent reason for it. She knows whoa.... I use a mild bit (a pee-wee bit), and I can stop her with this through the bolts, but the initial moments are scary and am too old to be afraid to ride her (54).  She only goes about 10 - 25 yards through the bolts. If she gets me off during this, she stops immediately and lets me catch her.  Otherwise, I'm able to stop her with the bit. But there is no reprimand afterward for these actions she does. She stops with one rein, turns on her hindquarters, and I ride her 3 times a week/4 hrs. at a time. At a loss what to do, I've done the proper groundwork? Thinking of going to a combo-bit, with nose pressure if she doesn't respond initially to the bit?  I am not giving up on her, just want to ride..... as she does, freely and without fear! Thank you for the work you do, with mule education!!!!!

Answer: Our methods are meant to be done in a sequence and taking shortcuts or changing our method in some way will not yield the same results. After many years of training for other people, I have found that equines, especially mules and donkeys, bond to the person who trains them. When they go away to other people, they do not get the benefit of this bonding and can become resistant over time when they return home. After all, you wouldn't ask someone else to go out and make a friend for you, would you? This is the primary reason I put my entire training program in books and videos, in a natural order like grade school is for children, for people to use as a resistance-free correspondence training course instead of doing clinics and seminars. People are encouraged to use the series and to contact me via mail, email or telephone for answers to any questions.

No matter how old or how well-trained the equine, they still need time doing the simplest of things to get to know you before they will learn to trust and have confidence in you. The exercises that you do should build the body slowly, sequentially and in good equine posture. No human or equine is born in good posture. It is something that needs to be taught and practiced repetitively if it is to become a natural way of moving the body. When the body is in good posture, all internal organs can function properly and the skeletal frame will be supported correctly. Just as our children need routine, ongoing learning and the right kind of exercise while they are growing up, so do equines. They need boundaries for their behavior clearly outlined to minimize anxious behaviors and inappropriate behavior, and the exercises that you do together need to build their strength and coordination in good equine posture. The time spent together during leading training and going forward builds a good solid relationship with your equine and fosters his confidence and trust in you because you actually help him to feel physically better. A carefully planned routine and an appropriate feeding program is critical to healthy development.

Most equines never experience core muscle strength and this becomes even more important as they age. We do leading training for a full year to not only get them to learn to lead and to develop a good relationship with them, but also to develop good posture and core muscle strength in preparation to carry a rider. Leading lessons for postural strength and balance need only be done for 15-20 minutes once a week in our HOURGLASS PATTERN to be certain that they aren’t fighting balance problems later when you mount and ride. “Drilling,” or too much of the wrong kind of exercises out of sequential order, will only tire the animal and cause them to get sour, sore and want to “leave.” There are a lot of tasks incorporated into this pattern that will not only build your mule’s core strength in good postural balance, but will also be enjoyable, promote easy execution of the tasks and command 100% of her attention at all times. Bolting will cease to be an issue. Even an older equine with previous training would still need this for optimum performance and longevity. During the time you do the leading training strengthening exercises, you should NOT ride the animal as this will inhibit the success of the preliminary exercises.

TRAINING QUESTION CONTINUED

If you ride while you do these exercises, it will not result in the same proper muscle conditioning, habitual behavior and new way balanced postural way of moving. The lessons need to be routine and done in good posture to acquire the correct results. Hold the lead rope in your LEFT hand, keep his head at your shoulder, match your steps with his front legs, point in the direction of travel with your right hand and look where you are going doing straight lines, gradual arcs and square him up with equal weight over all four feet EVERY TIME you stop. We are building NEW habits in their way of moving and the only way that can change is through routine, consistency in the routine and correctness in the execution of the exercises. Since this also requires that you be in good posture as well, you will also reap the benefits from this regimen. The lessons only need to be 30-40 minutes and done once a week at the least and every other day at the most. Along with feeding correctly (as described below), these exercises will help equines to drop fat rolls and to begin to take on a more correct shape and become strong in good posture.

Today’s horse training techniques do not generally work well with mules and donkeys. Most horse training techniques used today speed up the training process so people can ride or drive sooner. It makes the trainers' techniques more attractive, but most of these techniques do not adequately prepare the equine physically in good posture for the added stress of a rider on his back. Mules and donkeys have a very strong sense of self preservation and need work that builds their bodies properly so they will feel good in their new and correct posture, or you won't get the kind of results you might expect. Forming a good relationship with your equine begins with a consistent maintenance routine and appropriate groundwork. Most equines don't usually get the well-structured and extended groundwork training on the lead rope that paves the way to good balance, proper core muscle conditioning and a willing attitude.  This is essential if he is truly expected to be physically and mentally prepared for future equine activities. With donkeys and mules, this is critically important. There are no shortcuts!  Changing bits for more leverage will only exacerbate the problems. You must put in the time to develop their bodies correctly.

GOD BLESS BOBBY TANNER,
THE MOST AMAZING MULESKINNER OF ALL TIME!

We are so sorry to report the passing of our dear friend and the spectacular teamster of the 20-Mule Team, Bobby Tanner! We send our prayers to his family and will hold him in our hearts forever! Good-Bye, Bobby! You will most certainly be missed!

Bobby ran a mule packing operation started years ago by his father out of Red Meadows — east of Yosemite National Park, near Mammoth Mountain. The mule teams take celebrities and everyday people into the high country.  The scenery is breathtaking. He could fill books with his experiences.  In 2019 he helped revive a legendary part of the Old West — the Twenty Mule Team. As part of Bishop Mule Days, he created a hitch of 20 mules to pull the replica Borax wagons through the desert and onto the streets of Bishop. And he took us on one of his most popular pack trips — to Rainbow Falls, which is an unforgettable high Sierra experience.

TRAINING MULES AND DONKEYS:
A LOGICAL APPROACH TO LONGEARS

“Donkey and Mule Society (ADMS), we realized that the main problem we had to face was the fact that information on donkeys and mules was almost nonexistent. The verbal knowledge that had been passed along through the generations was dying out and could not, in any case, be easily shared with the new public, which, at this time, was beginning to get seriously interested in these animals. Oddly enough, books on donkeys started appearing on the market in moderate quantities after this time as a new club, oriented only for donkeys, came into being in England—at about the same time that ADMS started in the United States. At this time, however, there was only one actual book on the subject of mules, and it had been written about one hundred years ago! The staff at ADMS reprinted A Treatise on the Mule by Harvey Riley, written in 1869, and were glad to have anything with which to help people.”

“I still know of only three general-purpose mule books in print, which means that Training Mules and Donkeys: A Logical Approach to the Longears, by Meredith Hodges, will fill a place that has been vacant for many years. There are thousands of mule lovers in the United States who feel that they do not know how to train their mules or donkeys, and who, in despair, put them into the hands of trainers who do not understand their particular character, and who proceed to ruin animals that have the potential to be safe and loving companions for the next forty years. It is everyone’s hope that this book will help those individuals, or their trainers, to understand mules and donkeys, and to handle them correctly. All of us at the American Donkey and Mule Society hope that this book will improve the lot of an animal that is very popular, and that could be far more popular if correct training methods were applied so that everyone who wants one could have a beautiful, well-mannered, well-trained, modern mule.”
Betsy Hutchins, Co-Founder, American Donkey and Mule Society

Meredith began documenting her career with managing and training Longears and submitting articles to 25 equine newspapers and magazines internationally in 1982. In 1993, many of the articles were consolidated and published in TRAINING MULES AND DONKEYS: A LOGICAL APPROACH TO LONGEARSThis book began Meredith’s incredibly comprehensive “Training Mules & Donkeys” series of books, videos, TV Shows and Documentaries. The book contains a broad overview of the successful training philosophy and disciplines used in her approach to Longears training. She soon discovered how vast this knowledge was to become as she moved forward with the new challenges she experienced along her journey with Longears. As she learned more detailed information, it was also documented and published in her extensive books and videos that do overlap, but are NOT duplicated. She discovered that another series for children was needed so they could begin learning how to manage their own Longears as they were growing up. Thus, the JASPER THE MULE series was born. All of her books, videos and documentaries can be purchased individually, or as packages, from the store on her website at www.luckythreeranchstore.com.

Jasper and his friends’ adventures are now featured in books, on Meredith’s Video On Demand TV Shows and in a variety of animated videos. In addition to the Lucky Three Ranch website, she also designed www.JasperTheMule.com, a website especially for children that provides a fun, child-friendly environment in which they can learn to appreciate, love and care for equines and all living things.

The passion that Meredith Hodges feels for the equines that she has fought for all her adult life is still as fresh, inspiring and infectious as it was when she first discovered the world of horses, donkeys and mules. She has never wavered in her devotion to them and in her mission to carve a lasting and honored place for them in our world. They are lucky to have her as their champion, but Meredith actually sees it a bit differently. She feels honored and privileged to be a part of their world.

Bonnie’s Bit

You have to be crazy to draw mules! At least that was a popular opinion, but one Bonnie Shields chose to ignore. “I love mules. That’s why I draw ‘em.” It’s as simple as that. Born and raised in Southern Indiana, Bonnie wasn’t around mules until she moved to Tennessee in 1965. But, the meeting has proven to be remarkable. A longstanding member of the Cowboy Cartoonists Association, her wide variety of “mule art” can be viewed at numerous venues, mule and draft horse shows, Western arts and crafts shows, Western trade shows and on the internet at her website at www.Bonnieshields.com.  Her talents include drawing, painting and sculpture. She has done a wide variety from ink drawings to acrylic painting to bronze sculpture, from commissioned work to originals, all revering the mule. She has also written a multitude of articles for such publications as The Brayer, a bimonthly publication put out by the American Donkey & Mule Society, Mules and More MagazineWestern Mule Magazine and the “Bishop Mule Days” program.

Bonnie’s Letter

It has been super HOT in north Idaho this summer and the forest fires are all about us.  BUT, so far none close.  However, the air is muggy and full of smoke particles and if you have any breathing problems, you are having to deal with them.

My sweet IRIS mule has hit old-age all of a sudden.  She is 34 now and came through the winter just fine, but about a month ago, she suddenly hit a wall and has definitely changed, for the not-so-good.  My vet drew blood, but it showed nothing out of the ordinary, so she has changed and I am trying to go with her on this.

I try to encourage her to pick the green grass in our backyard every morning in the cool, and she usually does so for maybe 15 minutes then she leaves on her own for the big pasture full of nothing right now.

I am hanging in there with my work illustrating.  Do have a sweet story about a "lost" dog a friend found on the side of the highway in Montana several years ago.  Should start working on those illustrations soon, but right now I am doing a series of cartoons for a friend in Spokane, WA who insists on publishing books--with BS on the illustrations.  Brave?

Getting my act together for my booth at Hells Canyon Mule Days in September in Enterprise, OR.  It is my ONLY mule show anymore 'cause I love the people and the place.  SO BEAUTIFUL!  It is always the weekend AFTER Labor Day.

Enterprise is kinda hard to find, but well worth the trip.  Good mules and good people.  I recommend it.

See ya in Oregon in September?   Bonnie
